Why Do I Need an Out of Province Inspection?

Any vehicle brought into Alberta from outside of the province needs to pass an out of province inspection. Without an out of province inspection you will not be issued license plates for any vehicle brought in from outside the province. In order to register an out of province vehicle you will need an out of province inspection performed on the vehicle by a licensed technician.

What Does an Out of Province Inspection Involve?

An out of province inspection is an assessment of the safety and mechanical fitness of the vehicle. Usually out of province inspections take up to two hours to be performed and are done by licensed journeyman technicians.

The mechanical fitness assessment of an out of province inspection involves an inspection of virtually all of the vehicle’s components. During the inspection the vehicle’s fuel and exhaust systems, all electrical, engine controls, powertrain, driveline, steering, suspension, braking systems, wiring and lights, tires, glass, wipers and defrosters will be checked. In order to pass the inspection the vehicle must be maintained within Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) standards or wear tolerances.

Another aspect of an out of province inspection is the structural integrity assessment. This will establish whether or not the vehicle’s frame and body exhibit signs of major collision damage or repairs. Our technicians will also inspect the vehicle for any corrosion located within the vehicle’s body and frame during this portion of the inspection. In order to pass this portion of the inspection our technicians must determine that the structural integrity of the vehicle has not been compromised in any way.

If our licensed technicians come to the conclusion that your vehicle does not pass inspection you are allowed to take your vehicle to another technician for inspection. However our technicians are some of the most experienced and knowledgeable licensed out of province inspectors in Calgary. Our service advisors will explain an out of province inspection in detail and clearly present the repairs a vehicle requires in order to pass the inspection.

What if Happens After My Out of Province Inspection?

If your vehicle is determined to have failed an out of province inspection then your vehicle must be repaired within 10 days of the failure notice to avoid an additional full inspection fee assessment. Once your vehicle has undergone repairs, if it is presented for re-inspection within 10 days of the failure notice then only the required repairs will be subject to inspection and verification.

If your vehicle passes inspection then it is important to know that inspection certificates are only valid for 14 days, and vehicles must be registered in Alberta before the expiry date. If you fail to register your vehicle within 14 days of receiving your inspection certificate then a full out of province inspection will be required again.
